Slippery Rock University...

...where, among other places, a 1995 piece of mine which appeared on Time's Pathfinder web site was thrice quoted in a 1996 student paper. Were it not for that, I might never have even heard of the place.

Hamburger University

I'd love to have Hamburger U and Harvard on the same resume, that'd make for some lively interviews.

I had a friend in law school (who, coincidentally, attended UC Santa Cruz for undergrad and was a proud Banana Slug) who, after he'd taken a test first year, had a flushed look on his face and said to no one in particular "Hamburger U, here I come". He made it, though (at U of Arizona Law, not Hamburger U).

Most sublime college name

There once was a Sublimity College, located (surprisingly enough) in Sublimity (Oregon).

The first president was Milton Wright, later to become father of Orville and Wilbur.

Jack "...University of the Arctic..."

John: Or, comparably, Bering Straits University, Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska (motto: "The Oldest Permanent Floating Seat of Higher Education in the Frigid Zone"), which existed for a glorious three months, from June through August, 1960.

Perhaps we'll have to wait until they establish a university in Nunavut.

Literally or figuratively, that's a pretty cool name for a university. How many people wouldn't want that on a resume? Great conversation starter.

I particularly like the BCS (why of course, Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies--what else?) offered.

And BTW, good one, Jack

There are some interesting names among the Indian tribal colleges:

Stone Child College

Sinte Gleska University_

Dull Knife Memorial College

There's the utterly San Franciscan Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality. (Just think of their lab classes!)

If you count non-degree granting schools on the CHEA list, I think that these military schools sound cool in an action-movie kind of way:

Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center (San Diego, CA)

Fleet Intelligence Training Center, Pacific (San Diego, CA)

National Cryptologic School (Ft. Meade, MD)

National Geospatial Intelligence College (Ft. Belvior, VA)

Naval Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, Pacific (San Diego, CA)

And there's...

Hair Masters University of Beauty (San Bernadino, CA), which is accredited by NACCAS, the CHEA-recognized National Accrediting Council of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences.

While I know that it is named after a chap called "Dull Knife", I cannot refrain from thinking about the GPA of the students it attracts.

"Not the sharpest knife..."

Diablo Valey College (DVC) is a pretty cool campus -- fairly large for a CC. Lots of very pretty women in a upscale portion of CoCo County.

" Oklahoma Pandle"

Oops that should read Panhandle!

There is a Little Big Horn College in Montana among the tribal schools.

There is also the very personal Paul Smith's College in upstate New York.
