It looks very promising, Chip. Thank you.
Today's intriguing news was from a man I know slightly, Guy Bensusan, a distance learning pioneer at Northern Arizona U. He reports that he has been consulting with Northcentral U. (he calls it North Central U) for some months, and that their three-day site visit from the North Central Association ended earlier today, and it was "thumbs up." I assume (but have asked him) that that means they have gotten or are getting their candidacy. (Same owner as SCUPS). Well, we can go "tut tut" at some of the things that DETC does, but does this also mean that North Central Assoc. doesn't consider the past or, more likely, that there is a very clear firewall between SCUPS and Northcentral U.

It certainly looks like that is the case. Otherwise how do they rationalize the relationship? I guess, though, they could say that SCUPS (appears to be) operating legally within its' jurisdiction.

Good morning, everyone!
I'd like to offer my congratulations (and thanks) to the team that put this discussion group in operation! FWIW, the site appears to function very well. All of the links worked for me, including the search function and the FAQs. It was easy to edit my profile and my preferences, and registration was very quick. I'm glad you put the "post reply" and "post new topic" buttons at both the top and the bottom of each thread. This makes it more convenient for a user to add his or her $0.02 worth of feedback. ![]()

Thanks very much for your comments and kind words. The board is a work in progress, and I'm sure that it will change and improve with time and comments from participants.
Be sure and let any of the administrator/moderators know if you have any suggestions or comments. |

Northcentral U. has a report at http://www.ncu.edu./news/accreditati...evaluation.asp about the recommendation for initial candidacy
My guess is that there must be a clear division between SCUPS and NCU -- though Donald Hecht is founder of both. ------------------ Kristin Evenson Hirst http://distancelearn.about.com/ distancelearn.guide@about.com

I am looking forward to the rational debate and the value that comes from a reasonable clash of differing opinions.
I am a little less active lately as I am finishing up my written comps and hope to have my oral comps done by mid february. That will put me at ABD, with my dissertation topic and research method already approved by my mentor. I just need to tidy up my proposal. I hope to be defending my dissertation by August. It's been a trip, for sure. Many talk about the great distress that can accompany a dissertation, but I am convinced that the worst is behind me. The coursework was very time consuming and demanding. I am so clear on my dissertaiton that I think it will sail by fairly quickly (maybe I'm just working on my psyche here). Anyway, nice to see that Chip and John have put this site together. Paul C.

I am glad to see this forum finally come into being! Congrats to Dr. Bear on his latest edition. I am currently researching the Glasgow University PhD program and I would welcome any input anyone may have.

Thanks you guys for this fine discussion board!!! I was so sorry to see the other distance learning newsgroup turn into something so awful because of a few mean spirited people.
As someone who is currently involved in distance education (M.Div., External Degree Program, Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary), I really look forward to reading some sensible discussions regarding distance education. Thanks again!! You guys are the best!!! ------------------ Have a Great Day! Eddie Hodge

Good afternoon!
I realize your post mentioned the PhD program at Glasgow, so please ignore my response if you are set on a PhD instead of a DBA. If you would consider the DBA, there is some useful information available to you. The Glasgow DBA is set up as an "executive doctoral programme" as opposed to the more common research model for a UK PhD, and the student is expected to develop a learning contract with his/her employer and the University. It appears to be a very flexible approach, and I can send you the information that I have gathered or I can provide contact information. I also have a copy of the hard-to-find paper "Implementation of a Manufacturing Strategy Through Work Based Learning" by G. R. Burns & C. V. Chisholm, 1st UICEE World Conference in Engineering Education, Melbourne, Australia, Feb 1988, p.150-154. Dr. Burns is a leader of the DBA program, and his paper can give you a sample by which you can judge whether or not this program would be suitable for you. Let me know if I can provide any assistance. Quote:

Chip,
Good job! I run a UBB board myself so I know you'll have fun with it. [It's really too bad Infopop just raised their rates so dramatically though! ]------------------ Steve OptiBoard Discussion Forums
