View Full Version : Where did Prophetess Juanita Bynum get her Ph.D.?
Roscoe Barnes III
10-06-2003, 07:55 PM
She's a best-selling author and popular speaker in the pentecostal/charismatic camps. Has a show on TBN.
The biggest mystery is the source of her Ph.D.
The question has been posted a number of times at Charisma news forums, but no answer has been given. Not a few time, questions about her have been deleted by moderator. (Charisma is publisher of her latest book, "Matters of the Heart."
Can anyone here help determine the school?
Thanks.

Someone here contacted the school and was told that it did not grant Ph.Ds.

Apparently, this institution is a part of Truth for Living Ministries, but is actually called Truth Bible College & Seminary. It's "a member of Oral Roberts University Educational Fellowship."

prophecy is said to be a gift..
..to some so is a PhD.
BTW, for any prophets who wish to get the doc instead by study , Unizul has reduced its fees by 50%...now a total of but $1200. Wow!

I heard a radio interview with Raël. The interviewer said, "You have no scientific training." Raël replied, "I had the best scientific training -- on the Planet of the Elohim."

In this day and age, how does one go about becoming a prophetess or even a lowly apostle? Wouldn't assuming such titles be just a bit presumptuous and a tiny bit vain?

Not really.......just look at how many have been beatified and made saint by the Vatican in the last few years. And yes...you do have to take a number. :p

According to First Corinthians 12:28 apostles, prophets and teachers are called by God (given the gifts of apostleship, prophesy and teaching). The Bible warns against false prophets. Therefore, it can be deduced God still calls prophets. I don't think it is presumptuous for one to refer to oneself as a prophet anymore than it is presumptuous for one to call oneself a minister as God calls both. In Scripture a prophet is one who receives divine revelation and speaks God's word without error or omission. Prophecy is not preaching or teaching. The prophet only speaks or writes God's word without comment (Hebrews 1:1-2). The New Testament prophets speak His words to the local church (Acts 13:1-2). Of course there will be a wide range of opinions on this. This is just a simple, Biblical explanation.

If God creates prophets by calling them, how might this divine action be recognized and verified by mortals? In other words, how might parties external to the purported prophet's own individual relationship with the divine 'accredit' the truth of that relationship?
I suppose that to some extent the world's various religious traditions serve as alternative and often incompatible accreditors of individual religious experiences and claims.

BillDayson asks:If God creates prophets by calling them, how might this divine action be recognized and verified by mortals? But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Attacking a degree mill that is out to scam people is one thing...but I believe you have crossed the line on this one.
Just how many saints have been "made" in the last few years? How many of those who were canonized lived in the 1950-1999 era?
I suppose you already know that you must be dead to even be considered for sainthood. So who "takes the number"?

Degeeinfo is an inappropriate place to make attacks on a particular faith. I take a offense about the comments on the Catholic church. I would suggest that even on the off topic discussions this crosses the line.

I have not crossed the line on this issue. As a ex-catholic I can say with confidence that the vatican has been playing a numbers game for the past 20 years. There have been more beatifications and sainthoods "handed out" since 1981 by Pope John Paul that any other Pope in the history of the vatican.
Who takes a number? The 25 new cardinals, 23 religious people who have been beatified and approximately 7 new saints. I also did not mention death or dying in my statement......those are your words.

Wish I could take advantage of that price, but professionally I can not...The price is awesome...is that per year or total? That equals my current cost per sem. for a lower level degree...Now maybe once I finish up I can do it for personal reasons only.

John: Isomorphic, even. There have been at least three religious schools that stated in their literature that they were "accredited by God."

I wonder if His accreditation is good enough for Harvard or Princeton? :D

I didn't realize the reduction until I recently read the UZ Dept Religion website on doc faqs. Tried to post the URL but couldn't get it right-sorry. This price is for for those who enroll in 2003 and covers the tuition for the (about) three year program.

That's right. So we Conservative Baptists are presently busy at work trying to decide where in the canon we should put Juanita's writings. After the Gospels? With the Pastorals? Hmmm...Where do you think Jimmy?

To wit one Freelandia Bible College and Seminary (http://www.freelandiabiblecollege.com/) when it was in Missouri (or was it Oklahoma?). Today it is "approved unto God."

1) I'm not enough of an expert to really answer your question regarding implosion but I've recently read a newspaper story (sorry, I can't find the link) that the collection of South African universities are being challenged by the government to reduce costs so that a larger collection of South African citizens can afford to attend universities. South Africa is quite unlike the US in regards to its political/economic status and it seems clear that the creation of a larger educated middle class is a priority. They require further development and reducing the cost of university education (and thereby increasing the number of persons who can attend/graduate) becomes most important. The fact that this then makes it somewhat easier for us Western DL students is a happy by-product.
2) I think Roy's statement was alright. I, too, am a "fallen angel" and I believe that the Pope can handle a little heat.
3) I've noted that this is the third thread started by Roscoe that prominantly mentions Juanita Bynum. Roscoe, are you a bit obsessed? ;) Are you in the market for a fortune teller? :D Your question about the origin of her degree was answered in the last thread, why are you asking again?

Poor Prophetess Bynum, no where for her to go. Perhaps Gene Savoy can put her in the next printing of one of his great theological classics, The Decoded New Testament or The Lost Gospel of Jesus: The Hidden Teachings of Christ.

UZ didn't call and tell you the tuition had just been decreased by 50%? And its only for those who enroll in 2003, which means your tuition remains at 100%?
Hmmm, do all newly enrolled students also receive a glossy UZ sticker? ;)

Tragic for one who, as you've defined a prophet, "speaks God's Word without error and without omitting anything." Ah well, many ignored Elijah too:cool:

1. According to "Jabbezz," a poster at the Charisma site, the school mentioned above has denied giving her the Ph.D. At least, that's my understanding of what he posted.
2. Obsessed? No. More like "DegreeInfo Fever.":D
3. Not interested in fortune telling. Just frustrated with the use of the Ph.D. title by her publisher, Charisma House, and the popularity she continues to gain in spite of this questionable credential.
I have a plan and I'm doing some digging. That's all. Some of you know my background.:D

According to her site, " In June, Bynum received a doctoral degree in theology from Truth for Living Bible College in Jacksonville, Florida." I cannot pull up the school's site but when I do I will email them and inquire. I will post their reply when I receive it.

I look forward to the reply. It was rumored that the doc may have been given based on her popular books. The books are not research and they're loaded with slang and grammatical errors. Content seem to be a transcription of her talks.
Still, the books are bestsellers. What does this say about her followers? Or the power of TV celebrity?
Roscoe
THIS IS WEIRD. I can only access Degree Info by clicking on emails to me that a thread I have subscribed to has been responded to. Otherwise, I get Keen Comics Forum.
Anyway, Roscoe, don't be too concerned about Bynum's poor grammar. This is no longer a way to determine one's degree validity or legitimacy. I am so disgusted, on a daily basis, by the poor use of the English language. I heard Newt Gingrich, a Tulane Ph.D. and college professor, say "First let me congratulate he and Maria," when speaking of Arnold's winning. Professors, lawyers, psychologists, forensic experts, etc., with Ph.D.'s from Harvard, Yale, etc., constantly buthcer the English language. "It's between he and she," was a comment by college law professor Susan Estrich, who graduate Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Law School. I used to be able to tell about someone's education by listening to them speak, not anymore!
